Distributed-parameter Systems

Systematical mathematical modelling of a wide number of technical systems and processes leads usually to partial differential equations, if both the spatial dependence of the system’s variables and their time dynamics cannot be neglected. The focus of this research field lies on the development and practical application of methods for analysis, parameter identification, model order reduction, simulation, optimization, state estimation and control of these so-called distributed-parameter systems. Besides the classical approaches based on finite-dimensional approximation models, the late-lumping ansatz is here preferred to analyze and to solve control problems, i.e., the distributed-parameter plant description with partial differential equations forms the basis of the design method.
