Short Curriculum Vitae

Andreas Kugi is a full professor for Complex Dynamical Systems at Technische Universität Wien, Austria, and since 07/2023, he has been the Scientific Director of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (https://www.ait.ac.at/). He received a Dipl.-Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering from Technische Universität Graz, Austria, in 1992 and a Ph.D. (Dr.techn.) from the Johannes Kepler Universität (JKU), Linz, Austria, in 1995. In 2000, he got the Habilitation in the field of control theory and automatic control at JKU, and he was a full professor for system theory and automatic control at Saarland University in Germany from 2002 to 2007. He was offered full professor positions at Technische Universität Dresden and the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie.

His main research interests include the modeling, control, and optimization of complex dynamical systems, mechatronic system design, robotics, and process automation. In the last years, he has been collaborating with more than 40 national and international companies, among which are Andritz Hydro, AVL, Bosch, B&R, Böhler, Bühler, Dillinger Hüttenwerke, Engel, Festo, Infineon, Keba, Magna, Plansee, Schwing, Siemens, TTTech, voestalpine. These projects cover a wide range of applications in the automotive industry, robotics, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical drives, energy systems, and advanced process control applications in the metal industry. He consequently strives to combine advanced system theory and control with real-world applications in his work. In this way, he contributes to bridging the gap between theory and industrial practice.

Andreas Kugi has published more than 350 full peer-reviewed scientific papers (ORCID ID https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7995-1690), of which more than 160 in SCI/SCIE journals (for selected publications, see https://www.acin.tuwien.ac.at/publikationen/cds/). Moreover, he is the inventor or co-inventor of 149 patents in 43 patent families (source https://depatisnet.dpma.de 12/2022), and he has supervised more than 50 completed Ph.D. dissertations. He and his research group received 16 best paper awards (11 for journal and 5 for conference contributions), and he gave 11 plenary and semi-plenary lectures at international conferences.

From 2014 to 2021, Andreas Kugi was the head of the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Model-Based Process Control in the Steel Industry (https://www.acin.tuwien.ac.at/cdlab-kugi/), and from 2017 to 2023, he was the head of the Center for Vision, Automation & Control at the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), see https://www.ait.ac.at/ueber-das-ait/center/center-for-vision-automation-control/.

Apart from many other activities, Andreas Kugi was Editor-in-Chief (2010-2017) and is now Honorary Editor of the IFAC Journal Control Engineering Practice, is a member of the Advisory Board of the IFAC Journal Mechatronics, was Chair of IFAC CC4 on Mechatronics, Robotics, and Components, and was Vice President of the OVE Austrian Electrotechnical Association (2017-2023). He is a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and a member of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech).
